Dry skin?

Dry skin, but what is it?

The medical term is xerosis cutis, but to make things easier let's say that: “dry skin” means a type of skin that has a deficiency of sebum and skin lipids.

How do I recognize it?

What do I see?

  • dull and lifeless skin
  • uneven skin tone with redness
  • flaking
  • invisible pores and fine grain

What sensations do I feel?

  • tight and inelastic skin
  • rough skin

What are the causes?

This condition can be constitutional, and therefore present from birth, or acquired due to factors

  • external, such as atmospheric agents (wind, cold) and the use of aggressive cosmetic products and soaps or particular medicines,
  • internal factors such as aging and hormonal changes (menopause) which often lead to a decrease in the activity of the sebaceous glands.
These conditions can in fact lead to a deficiency in the normal production of skin sebum, which is a fundamental part of the hydrolipidic film that protects our skin.
An alteration of this thin layer leads to  therefore a lack of the natural barrier action of the skin, which is unable to maintain the normal state of hydration in the innermost layers.

Our advice...

Precisely because of the lack of both lipids and water, dry skin requires the use of rich and nourishing products containing substances such as ceramides, fatty acids and phospholipids that are able to emulate the composition of the stratum corneum and restore the barrier function.

To these, the addition of hydrating agents, such as hyaluronic acid, helps restore the natural moisturizing factor (NMF) and retain water in the internal layers.
